Everyone needs a little getaway. In economic times when the discretionary dollar is being stretched as never before, it’s become even more critical for the savvy traveller to know how to make the most of their vacation time. Below are some quick tips to make sure your next trip is a stress-free one.

Planning is one of the most important keys to successful and stress-free travel. For example, make sure you know the difference between a nonstop and a direct flight, and always choose the first option. Nonstop by definition means that a plane takes off and lands once, unlike a direct flight, which can touch down at multiple airports on the way to their final destination. Although stops are built into the total flight time, the varied reasons that takeoff can be delayed are not. Always choose nonstop, unless direct flights are truly your only option. In those instances, all one can do is hope for the best.

Also make sure that you purchase your tickets under the exact same name listed on your picture ID. This includes middle initials, hyphenated names, etc. If the name listed on your ID is Rebecca, but you go by Becky, then Rebecca is the name to list when booking your flight. With heightened airport security now the norm, don’t expect to rely anyone being willing to give you a pass. Not going to happen.

It’s wise to select your seats as soon as possible. For example, if you have a disability or need the seats with additional space next to the plane’s bulkhead, let an agent know this when booking the flight rather than risking the possibility that your options will be gone when requesting a special accommodation when checking in.
Be especially vigilant about checking on all foreign country entrance requirements before you are on a flight and discover that your visa doesn’t actually allow you into the country you’re flying to.

In spite of the economic crunch, more people than ever before are taking advantage of their discretionary time by getting away from it all. Travel is as popular as ever. However, if careful planning isn’t done ahead of time, a dream vacation can quickly turn into a travel nightmare. Here are a few suggestions from experienced and savvy travelers that are proven to make that upcoming escape all you hoped and dreamed it’d be.

Be sure to schedule your flights to arrive in any gateway cities you are flying into as early in the day as possible. Airline delays increase as the day progresses, meaning you are less likely to be affected the earlier in the day you are flying. Spending a few planned extra hours at the airport is far less stressful than missing a connection because your first flight was late.

Also be sure to make your luggage stand out in a crowd. Tying a colored ribbon to a suitcase may make it prettier to look at, but it’s not likely to distinguish it from the fifty other suitcases that are also showing off fancy ribbons and bows. A better move is to purchase a suitcase in an unusual color, such as bright blue, orange, or yellow.

Stockpiling personal care products in sample size has proven to be a very wise strategy for the inevitable delayed, missed or cancelled flights that are part of many travel plans. Carrying sample-size cosmetics, shampoos and oral-care products has often made a tremendous difference for travelers dealing with these and other unexpected delays.

Bringing along your own blanket and baby wipes is another smart move. Airline blankets qualify for that name in the loosest possible sense. And as for the baby wipes? It’s a little known fact that the trays you eat on are not in fact cleaned after each and every flight, but rather only when they appear to be sufficiently dirty. Better safe than sorry.

With life becoming ever more stress-filled and challenging, travel has become the choice of many for relaxation and rejuvenation. The trick is to be sure that that needed vacation doesn’t lead to increased stress. Here are a few tips to the wise:

One tip you may not have thought of is how to pay for your trip.  Do not spend money that you do not have which will cause even more stress.  One way to have money for your trip is to have a tax services company prepare you taxes so that you get the most money back.  Then reward yourself by using some of that money to go on a trip

Be sure you know your airport’s code. It is surprisingly easy for luggage tags to get misdirected during curbside check-in. Make it a priority to learn the three-letter code of your destination city. Once at the airport, double-check to make sure the skycap properly labels your bags. These codes aren’t always intuitive, so also check for the code online before arriving at the airport.

Ask about all available options when booking a flight. For example, a long wait at an airport, especially with children, can be made much more tolerable by asking travel agents and local insiders for advice. There may be a fun place for the kids to play or a great local restaurant nearby that allow for an unplanned bonus instead of sitting in those lovely (and sparkly clean) airport seats as the hours until your flight drag by.

Be extra cautious in those airport duty-free shops. Many of the so-called bargains are anything but. Instead of splurging on that bottle of Opium perfume because you think you’re saving big the taxes, check your local store or online before you travel for the same items. You’ll also want to keep in mind the weight of those items, which can quickly add up. With so many airlines now charging extra for checked baggage as well as for excessive weight, a bargain may quickly turn into anything but.

If it’s in the budget, splurge on the use of an airport lounge. For around $50, you can take advantage of comfortable seating, clean and spacious bathrooms, and tasty drinks and snacks. Additionally, you’ll have quick access to travel agents who aren’t dealing with fifty other passengers, each one anxious about reserving a good seat.

Although airline travel is a safe form of travel, it is always wise to be prepared for all situations and to be knowledgeable on air travel safety. The following common sense travel information and tips for flying safely are easy to remember and put into practice.

Choose Nonstop Flights – Most aircraft disasters take place during the takeoff and landing, so the best way to avoid being in an accident is to book less flights. Nonstop flights will save you time in the long run, but more importantly, you are avoiding the most dangerous parts of the flight.

Choose Larger Aircraft – Larger aircraft of over 30 seats are subject to very strict regulations for certification. They also seem to offer better survival opportunities in the unlikely event of an accident.

Listen to the Pre Flight Briefing – No matter how many times you have heard it before, pay attention when the attendant gives the safety briefing. Each aircraft type is slightly different and it is worth taking the time out to listen.

Pack the Storage Bin with Care – Heavy luggage is not safe in the overhead storage bins, so if it is difficult to lift up and pack, it probably should not be stored there. It could cause serious injury if a heavy bag fell out of the storage bin onto your head, so make sure to pack your own hand luggage above your seat.

Keep Your Seat Belt Fastened – Seat belts that are not too tight will not bother you, so it is a good idea to keep it fastened during the flight. It gives extra protection during turbulence. Believe it or now, I’ve checked it in an online survey software that many people neglect to fasten their seat belts, which is not at all a good sign to travel.

Allow the Flight Attendant to Pour Your Drinks – The attendants are trained to pour hot drinks in a crowded situation while in motion, so let them do the pouring for you. It will avoid painful spills.

Use these travel information and tips to fly safely when you travel. They are simple to put into practice and will soon become a travel habit that will keep you safe.
